Why are You Keeping all the Clutter?

You know what the real problem is with getting organized? We have too much stuff! I’m willing to bet you have some things you (or someone you live with) keep without having a good enough reason.

So why DO we keep so much stuff?

The thing is, it’s easier to find excuses for why you should keep something and delay making a decision rather than making a firm (and sometimes difficult) choice to say goodbye to your “stuff.”

Here are four of my favorite excuses…

1. “I might need it someday.”

Yes, you might. But the thing is most of the items we keep can easily be found or replaced within a day or two. Lots of men (my dad included) keep every screw and nail created and store it away like a squirrel with his nuts.

But what happens is these little tiny items create more and more clutter and it gets to a point where you can’t find that little screw anyway because it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.

2. “I’m going to lose some weight and start wearing this again.”

I hope if you have a goal to lose some weight, you do everything in your power to make it happen. And when you do, I give you permission to go out and find a sale and buy some brand new clothes. You should be proud and it’s the perfect time to reward yourself.

3. “So-and-So Gave Me This.”

I’m all for keeping memories and items that remind us of people we love. But the truth is, memories are not in the clutter, the knick-knacks and “stuff” you have shoved in a box.

I won’t say get rid of everything and it’s not always an easy decision. But try and just keep the special things you cherish.

And get them out in the open, on display – where you can enjoy them and have a story to tell when someone comments or asks a question about the item.

4. I paid good money for this…”thing!”

I’m sure you did. But the thing is, what has more value…this “item” you no longer have any use for or the way you enjoy your house? The item…or your happiness? The item… or your space?

5. Oh, I’m just trying to figure out what to do with it…

Okay, so maybe it’s not worth holding onto.

See, if it takes that much mental work to figure out what to do with something, you can take a pretty good guess that it may not be worth as much to you as you think.

If you can’t figure out what to do with something…it’s a safe bet you won’t miss it too much. There is a lot more value in enjoying your home, your friends and your family than the “stuff” you paid for.

 

Let it go…… get organized….. declutter!

Organizing Tips for Keeping the Refrigerator Organized

Almost any place in the house could clutter. Your kitchen may bring about your worst nightmare. This is not surprising because that area of the house is among the most active. You frequent the kitchen, no less. You cook and prepare food there. When you buy grocery items, you put and store perishable and consumable items there. There could be several cabinets that could help keep your kitchen orderly and organized. Your refrigerator could also be a great tool to keep order in that part of the house. Many organization tips are also dealing with how to keep the fridge as orderly and as helpful as it should be.

You may not be fully aware of it, but your own refrigerator may already be cluttering. There might be too much stuff stored inside. You may add up content of the fridge on an everyday basis. At times, food may be stored for longer periods. The fridge could truly be a total mess. It is time to introduce some order into it. Here are several guidelines.

Check your refrigerator everyday. There might be food content that should not be stored in it anymore. Does it look like you are keeping a science experiment at the fridge? Be meticulous. Reality check. Inspect all food stored inside. Are there foods that are already accumulating moss-like structures? Are there contents that do not smell good anymore? You could start throwing away such foods. They only make your ref messy.

Check the milk boxes. If the content already smells sour, throw it away. Do not wait until the expiry of milk. Most of the time, it could already smell foul a few days after you opened it. This tip could also serve as a safety precaution. Also be particularly meticulous about how other dairy products in the fridge look and smell. Be specifically careful about cheese, butter, and ice creams.

Check the freezer? Is it already cluttering? Perhaps, you should start taking out some of the freezer’s content. Meat and livestock that are stored there for about a month or longer should already be taken out. The quality of such meat might not be fit for human consumption anymore. De-cluttering the freezer could also serve as a strategy to lower your possible electric bill.

Are the vegetables still edible? If they are already spoiled and are not in good condition, throw them away. Such vegetables may incur and produce foul smell that may linger in the entire refrigerator. The same case goes for fruits.

Make it a point to clean the fridge at least once a week. You should check the freshness and safety of all the content. Just like in all other organization tips, throw away everything that could already be considered as clutter. Do not stuff too much leftovers. If you could not help it, make sure you immediately consume such in a few hours, not days.

Need Help Organizing Clutter?

Clutter is a problem for many people. You may not know it by walking into their house, but they could have piles and piles of it in their closets. You may need help with organizing clutter as well – even if you only have a little bit. Most of the clutter you have is because you are sure you are going to need something – though you are not sure when. That means saving items that seem to have no value to anyone else. You may also not have time to put things away – or lack the space to store your belongings – and you end up with piles around the house that are driving you nuts. Take a day or two to get everything under control and you will feel a whole lot better.

Organizing clutter in your closets may be a matter of taking everything out and starting all over again. If you do not have a lot of storage shelves and hanging bars, you should go out and get some. You can get odd pieces almost anywhere that has home materials, or you can go to a home store and get closet organizer sets. Some are small and some can be as large as you need. You should measure your closets throughly so that you know what pieces you can and can not fit into your own personal space. Once you do that, you can then rearrange and put things back into your new closet space.

Before you put everything back, however, do not forget the most important part of organizing clutter. You have to find a way to let go of some things that you may have been holding on to for a very long time. You should have a few boxes ready for some things that you can either give away to someone you know, to a charity, or that you can throw out for good. If you have not used something in six months, and it is not something you know you will use for sure – get rid of it. You want to save holiday decorations and the like – but that spare computer printer that was made ten years ago can go. It is probably useless anyway.

You can and should do the same things with your clothes if you are working on organizing clutter in your closets. If you have not worn something in six months, you probably will not wear it again. Get it out of your closet and your life. The exclusions would be things you are saving for next winter or next summer, but the suit you wore for your first job interview five years ago is out of style and you are not going to find any new use for it. Be reasonable about what you are going to wear when organizing clutter and your stash of useless things will be far smaller and more manageable.

When you go about organizing clutter in other parts of your home, you have to take a few hours to decide what you really need to save, what papers you can take care of and throw out, and what you can discard right away. This may be piles of mail on your table, or a bunch of plastic storage bowls that you have no place for in your kitchen. Save the good pieces and then get rid of the rest. If a bowl has no lid, it is not doing you much good. You need far less of these than you think. Use this system when organizing clutter anywhere and you will soon be breathing easier.
